And my mother is a Medical Doctor (Dermatologist) by profession and an artist by passion. Film actor, voice over artist. Passionate about raising social issues through different creative mediums.
Your early education:
I am a person with Cerebral Palsy, a condition that occurs when your brain suffers from lack of oxygen at the time of birth. My disability went undetected until the age 1, after which, the real hustle and habilitation began. I was refused admission by many schools, just because of my disability.
During my school days, I struggled a lot in studies, due to dyslexia (which got diagnosed at the age of 5) and slow handwriting. Classmates often refused me to lend their notebooks for completing my notes. But despite these setbacks, I achieved a distinction in the 10th standard and many newspapers covered my story.
Your career advancement initiatives, volunteer work and present occupation:
I am a disability rights activist, author and a model. I made my modeling debut at a fashion event, which went on to make the Guinness Book of World Records for The Most Designers to Present in a Single Continuous Fashion Show in 2018
In 2019, with my first book Shivay: The Wonder Boy, I introduced India’s first superhero, whose alter-ego is physically challenged.
In 2021, I was among the top 25 PWDs from all over India, who were awarded the prestigious NCPEDP – Javed Abidi Fellowship on Disability,
I worked on the issue of Maintenance of data on crimes and abuse against Persons with Disabilities
As a part of my endeavours to highlight and spread awareness about the sensitivity of disability abuse in India, I kick-started a social media campaign called #AbusingTheDisability, where I shared some hard hitting facts, media reports accompanied by heart wrenching narratives of dynamic and dauntless PWDs, who got vocal about their experiences of humiliation, exploitation and discrimination. The campaign went viral and was widely appreciated for its boldness and hard hitting approach. The campaign is available on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
My efforts first reached the global audience when I got invited on a California based award winning podcast to share about my life journey and my work in the Indian disability sector.
Owing to my advocacy efforts in the fellowship, I got invited by the US State Department to be a part of IVLP in March 2023. The International Visitor Leadership Program is a flagship program of the United State of America’s State Department that invites current or potential leaders in government, politics and other fields.
My earnest efforts also resulted in orders from the Haryana State Commissioner of Disability for the Haryana Police Department, recommending it to issue enforceable guidelines for recording the crimes against persons with disabilities in the state.
Apart from this, I also got chosen as the Purple Ambassador by the State Government of Goa to represent cerebral palsy at the International Purple Fest 2024, where I raised the issue of nationwide scarcity of data on crimes against persons with disabilities before all the State Commissioners of Persons with Disability as well as the Deputy Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disability. Consequently, the Court of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities took due cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to Ministry of Home Affairs and National Crime Record Bureau for a response on this pertinent issue.
My life’s journey has also been featured on prominent story telling platforms like The Better India, Humans of Bombay, Storiyaan etc.

I have always worked keeping in mind improving our image in Canadian society. I urge all to refrain from taking short cuts to become rich overnight in Canada, e.g. stealing, robbing, dealing in drugs etc. because that brings us bad tags and that is bad for our next generations here. Our ultimate refuse at present is Canada, and if we ruin its system like we have in our native country, we will have no place to go for a good life. Please love Canada as your own home work hard to make it better day by day.

Asian Star – Vishwa Patel
Native Village/Country parent’s background
I was born in Ahmedabad, India. My parents, both engineers, and grandparents raised me in a household that valued education, hard work, and compassion above all else. This rich heritage fostered my deep love for learning from a young age. Growing up in a family full of engineers, teachers, and physicians instilled in me the importance of knowledge and dedication.
Your Early Education
I began grade 5 in Ahmedabad but had to start from grade 4 upon arriving in Canada. My journey in Canada involved moving schools every year for four years, which made it challenging to make lasting friendships. However, I found my community in T.D. Baker, where I stayed for three years. From there, I earned a spot among the 120 students in the Old Scona Academic Class of 2021.
When & Why You came to Canada
I moved to Canada at the age of 9 and settled in Edmonton at age 10. The decision to move was driven by my parents’ desire for better educational and career opportunities and a higher quality of life. I vividly remember our first day in Edmonton, greeted by a thick blanket of snow, a sight both beautiful and daunting.
Your career advancement initiatives, volunteer work and present occupation
I am entering my fourth year of Honors Nursing at the University of Alberta. Since my teenage years, I have been a dedicated community volunteer, contributing to organizations such as the Misericordia Community Hospital and The Steadward Centre. Currently, I volunteer at the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, the University of Alberta Hospital, and with Kids Cancer Care.
At the University of Alberta, I hold several leadership positions: VP Events for TeamUP Science, co-President of the Indian Students’ Association, and President of the Health Sciences Students’ Association. Additionally, I serve as co-Chair for the Edmonton chapter of ISSO Seva, an international non-profit focused on inspiring and engaging communities in humanitarian efforts.
This summer, I am participating in a studentship focused on women’s cardiovascular health. My academic and volunteer work is a tribute to my parents’ sacrifices, especially my dad’s relentless work ethic and my mom’s perseverance in re-educating herself while caring for our family.
Your Regret in Life
One of my regrets is not being able to fully appreciate the extent of my parents’ sacrifices while I was younger. As a child, I couldn’t grasp the magnitude of their efforts, but I am deeply grateful now and strive to honor their hard work through my achievements. I am striving to give my parents all that they couldn’t have and all that they deserve and more.
Pick Any One of Your Best Achievements
One of my proudest achievements is being accepted into Old Scona Academic High School. This accomplishment reflects my dedication, my family’s unwavering support, and the blessings of Shree Swaminarayan Bhagwan.
I vividly remember the moment I received the news. It was a random spring afternoon, and my dad was catching up on sleep after a long night shift and preparing for the next one. When the call came, he answered groggily, initially confused about its purpose. However, he fully awoke when he heard that his only daughter had been accepted into the most prestigious school in Edmonton. Overjoyed, he immediately called me, and I answered while performing Seva at my temple.
This moment felt like everything had come full circle: my parent’s relentless efforts to provide for our family, my hard work in school, and the divine blessings I received through my Seva at the temple all converged to make this achievement possible.
Were You Ever Discriminated?
I have encountered significant challenges and biases, particularly as an immigrant adjusting to new cultural and educational environments. During my first nursing school rotation, I faced explicit discrimination from an instructor who displayed a clear bias in favor of my Caucasian peers. She consistently looked down on students of color, often failing to remember our names and confusing us with one another despite our distinct appearances. These experiences, while difficult, have ultimately strengthened my resolve and resilience, reinforcing my commitment to overcoming adversity and excelling in my chosen field.
Are You Happy in Canada?
Yes, I am very happy in Canada. The country has provided me with countless opportunities for personal and professional growth. I appreciate the diverse and inclusive society that Canada offers, which has made it easier for me to adjust and thrive.
Any Comments on Canada’s Culture
Canada’s culture is a rich mosaic of various traditions and customs from around the world. The respect for multiculturalism and inclusivity is one of Canada’s greatest strengths, fostering a sense of belonging for people from diverse backgrounds. As an immigrant, I have found the cultural diversity and acceptance in Canada incredibly welcoming and supportive, making it easier to integrate and feel at home. This environment not only celebrates different cultures but also encourages personal and professional growth, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic society.
Any Comments on Canada’s Weather
Canadian weather is diverse and can be challenging, especially the harsh winters. Adjusting to the cold and snowy conditions was a significant change for me as an immigrant. However, the beauty of the changing seasons, particularly the vibrant fall colors and serene summer landscapes, makes it a unique and memorable experience. Each season offers its own charm, from the blooming flowers of spring to the warm, sunny days of summer. Despite the occasional weather-related challenges, the distinct seasons contribute to Canada’s unique charm and appeal.
What Brought You Success in Canada?
My success in Canada can be attributed to a combination of hard work, determination, the unwavering support of my family, and the continuous blessings from my Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The emphasis on continuous learning and the inclusive nature of Canadian society have also played crucial roles.
Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants and How?
Absolutely. I am deeply committed to helping new immigrants by offering mentorship, sharing my experiences, and guiding them through the challenges of integrating into Canadian society. I believe in giving back to the community that has welcomed me, mirroring the efforts of my father, who actively assists new immigrants and international students. He provides mentorship, answers their questions, helps them find housing, arranges transportation from the airport, and supports them in finding work. Inspired by his dedication, I strive to extend the same level of support to new arrivals, ensuring they feel welcomed and empowered to succeed in their new home.

Our life is too much based on phones, social media so somewhere we are disconnected from realties of the World and inner self. Fiber love has defeated the true love and affection with near and dear ones. We need to use these things judiciously to overcome this menace.

Canada is an amazing country with a rich heritage of liberty and equality. I am grateful to be Canadian and consider myself blessed to have been raised in this country and to be able to build my life here. However, there is certainly room for improvement, particularly given the current state in which we find our country. I believe I will be able to say with greater assertiveness that I am happy in Canada once we have stronger national leadership—leadership that respects the dignity and freedom of all Canadians and fosters an environment of growth and responsible governance.
Any Comments on Canada’s Culture
Canadian culture was built upon, and continues to be rooted in, the concept of pluralism—the idea that people of different backgrounds, convictions, and interests can peacefully coexist as friends and neighbours. There are few places in the world in which Canada’s ethnocultural dynamism can be matched. From sea to sea, Canada’s culture is renowned for being accepting and open to all while maintaining a high degree of equality. You can experience cultural traditions and religious practices from around the world without leaving your city—that is what makes Canada’s culture truly unique. And, it is our display of respect for one another that draws people from around the world to our country.
Any Comments on Canada’s Weather
Although I appreciate experiencing all four seasons, I am partial toward Canadian summers.
What Brought You Success in Canada?
Anyone can achieve success in Canada by working hard, working honestly, and working humbly. These are attributes that I have witnessed in my home, in my community, and in my travels across the country, and I have seen that taking a principled approach to anything you do in life will always produce success. Canada was built on the backs of people who dared to take risks, were willing to sacrifice personal comforts, and aimed toward creating a better environment not only for themselves but for all those around them as well. I am merely attempting to follow in the footsteps of those who have paved the way for me.
Are You Willing To Help New Immigrants and How?
Immigrants are an integral part of Canada’s history and will continue to play a critical role in our country’s future growth and prosperity. The importance of and value in assisting new immigrants in their early days in Canada cannot be overstated. Through my family’s charity work—which involves sponsoring immigrants and refugees to come to Canada—I have been involved in helping new Canadians settle into cities across the country for more than a decade. This experience has shown me that having a strong community network is paramount for new immigrants in order to adjust well. I hope to work on enhancing government initiatives that bolster civil society and community support systems that are providing essential services to new immigrants.
Your Message for Canadians of Asian Origin
Canadians of Asian origin have contributed significantly to our country and should be proud of their accomplishments. Building a new life in a foreign land is no menial task—it requires determination, conviction, and strength. For Asian-origin Canadians that have successfully settled and built their lives in Canada, I believe it is important to remember that we owe it to this country, our new home, to ceaselessly work toward its betterment and growth. Canada is a country of untapped potential. We should all strive to use our personal skills and specializations to make advancements in all industries and sectors and produce results that make Canada an exemplary nation on the world stage.
We must also never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy in this country—freedoms that are either constantly under threat or simply do not exist in our countries of origin. We have a duty to all those who have fought and sacrificed for this country, and to future generations, to keep Canada strong and free.

Many of them are CEOs of Fortunate 500 companies, Private Business Owners, Doctors, Lawyers etc. – I should take advice from them lol.
My message would be:
Let’s collaborate, not compete. Let’s collectively focus on the challenges that Canada faces and tackle them together so our good and sincere intentions are never questioned. I believe we can be effective. Always give back to the society in any way you can.
