Asian Star- Dr Jagvir Singh

Dr Jagvir Singh

Native Village/Country:

My origins are from rural Delhi, India, but spent much of my formative years in Haryana and Chandigarh. Growing up in a modest yet values-driven environment, I was instilled with a strong work ethic, resilience, and a deep respect for education. My upbringing emphasized integrity, perseverance, and the importance of contributing meaningfully to society -principles that continue to guide both my personal and professional journey.

Your Early Education:

I had the privilege of completing my schooling at one of India’s first Navodaya Vidyalayas – an institution known for nurturing discipline, leadership, and a spirit of excellence. This foundation played a defining role in shaping my confidence and ethical outlook.

I pursued a Master’s degree in Industrial Chemistry followed by an MBA from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar. Driven by a passion for scientific advancement, I went on to complete my PhD in Chemical Engineering (Nanotechnology) from Panjab University, Chandigarh, focusing on translating advanced research into real-world applications.

When & Why You came to Canada:

Interestingly, I never initially envisioned moving abroad. However, my deep-rooted passion for research and innovation led me to explore opportunities beyond borders. Canada offered a unique ecosystem where scientific research could be translated into commercially viable solutions.

My decision was driven by a singular vision – to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and market-ready innovations, ensuring that impactful technologies do not remain confined to academic spaces.

Your career advancement initiatives, volunteer work, and present occupation:

After initially working with University of Alberta, NAIT & Lethbridge College, I founded Swift Innovations with sole purpose of swiftly commercialising the technologies from lab which usually don’t see the light of the day.

Recognizing a critical gap between innovation and commercialization, I founded Swift Innovations, a company built on the philosophy of accelerating the journey from lab to market. Today, we specialize in advanced skincare manufacturing, nanoencapsulation technologies, supercritical extraction of bioactives and sustainable formulation development.

We have successfully supported the launch of over 150 products, enabling entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life through end-to-end development solutions. Our in-house brand, Refresh Botanicals, reflects our commitment to clean, sustainable, and scientifically advanced skincare, and is now expanding globally with presence in over 1,200 retail stores, including major retailers like Walmart Canada, Sobeys, Winners, etc.

Beyond business, I actively mentor new immigrants and aspiring entrepreneurs – guiding them in career development, job search strategies, and navigating the Canadian innovation ecosystem.

 Your Regret in Life:

As someone deeply driven by innovation and entrepreneurship, I often find that personal pursuits – such as travel and exploring new cultures – take a back seat. While the journey has been fulfilling, I aspire to create a better balance in the future.

Pick Any One of Your Best Achievements:

Building a successful organization like Swift Innovations from the ground up – without any prior business background, stands as one of my most significant achievements. Transforming scientific expertise into a scalable business and creating a globally recognized brand like Refresh Botanicals has been both challenging and deeply rewarding.

Did you face discrimination?

Like many immigrants, I have encountered moments of bias and challenges. However, I chose to view these experiences as stepping stones rather than obstacles. My focus remained on growth, innovation, and delivering value, allowing determination and results to speak louder than circumstances.

Are You Happy in Canada?

Yes, Canada offers immense opportunities, especially for individuals driven by innovation and entrepreneurship. At the same time, scaling a business here comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in terms of access to capital and market size. Nonetheless, the ecosystem remains highly supportive for those willing to persevere.

Your take on Canada’s Culture:

Canada is a truly inclusive and multicultural Nation. It embraces diversity and encourages innovation across sectors. The openness to ideas and respect for different backgrounds creates a fertile ground for both personal and professional growth.

What about Canada’s Weather:

The weather can be quite challenging, especially during extended winters. However, like many aspects of life here, it becomes part of the experience one learns to adapt to over time.

What Brought You Success in Canada?

A combination of bold decision-making, resilience, and a willingness to take calculated risks has been instrumental. Equally important has been the ability to continuously learn, adapt, and remain focused on long-term vision despite short-term challenges.

Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants and How?

Absolutely. Supporting new immigrants has been an integral part of my journey. I actively mentor individuals in career planning, job search strategies, and entrepreneurship. I believe in creating pathways for others to succeed, just as I have been supported along the way.

Your Message for Canadians of Asian Origin:

The Asian community has made significant contributions across industries and sectors. Our resilience, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit are powerful assets. I encourage everyone to continue striving, innovating, and supporting one another, while proudly embracing our roots and contributing to the broader Canadian Society.
