Firing in Gurdaspur central jail as inmates attack jail wardens

Firing and smoke was reported from Gurdaspur jail on Friday after four undertrials attacked two jail wardens with plastic pipes.
Shots were fired in the air by jail security staff stationed in the guard tower to de-escalate the situation. The extra police force was rushed from the local police station equipped with shields and sticks to the jail.
The jail siren was sounded at 12.45 pm, after the attack on the wardens. The plastic pipes used in the attack were removed from the wall by the inmates. Around 40 inmates in barrack no 4 (1) burned blankets to protest and demand the transfer of jail superintendent Dilbag Singh Gill . Inmates even broke CCTVs and phone jammer facilities in the jail.
According to sources, inmates attacked two wardens as they were unhappy with the increased security measures which curtailed their visitation rights. The two undertrials were identified as Shamsher Singh, Jagtar Singh Jagga, Romi and Gopi.
Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bhupinderjeet Singh Virk and sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sandeep Singh have reached the Gurdaspur jail to control the situation.
In November 2016, armed men attacked a high-security Punjab jail and fled with dreaded militant and Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) “chief” Harminder Singh, alias Mintoo .
The men who broke into the jail were dressed in police uniforms and fired more than 200 rounds before fleeing with Mintoo and five infamous gangsters from the Nabha jail in Patiala district.
