3 children, 2 women found dead: Manitoba RCMP

The deaths of five individuals, including three children, have sent shockwaves across Manitoba on Sunday.

On Feb. 11, the Manitoba RCMP confirmed that the five people were known to each other. The three children were pulled out of a burning vehicle on Sunday.

“This is a tragic day for so many people who have lost a loved one today,” said Inspector Tim Arsenal with the Manitoba RCMP. “For the community of Carman and for this province, there are many questions we still need to be answered.”

Manitoba RCMP held a press conference on Feb. 11 to provide some details on the tragedy.

“We have teams of officers working across southern Manitoba to determine what exactly happened and what led to these events,” said Inspector Arsenal.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., Carman RCMP responded to what was reported to be a hit-and-run on Highway #3, which is approximately six and a half kilometres south of Carman.

“When officers arrived, the body of an adult female was located just off the highway in a nearby ditch,” said Arsenal. “She was pronounced deceased at the scene at 10 a.m.”

RCMP received a call about a vehicle fire on Highway 248, north of provincial Highway 424. In the area of Kirkgate.

“As officers were going to the scene, a witness was able to pull three young children from a burning vehicle,” he said. “Tragically, all three children were declared deceased on scene.”

Police stated that one suspect is in custody and that there is no risk to public safety.

“I want to express my condolences to the families and friends who have lost a loved one today,” he said. “The RCMP and everyone in Manitoba stand with you.”
