Srinagar : Two militants were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army said on Tuesday.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Wanipora area of Shopian on Monday evening following information about presence of militants in the area, an army official said.
According to officials, when security forces challenged the militants, they opened fire resulting in an encounter.
According to a police spokesman, “the bodies of both the militants along with their weapons have been recovered”.
The operation was still on as a third militant was still alive and he had “started firing again,” inspector general of police, Muneer Khan said.
While the police is yet to identify the militants, sources have identified a slain militant as Tanveer Ahmad Bhat from Bhatmaran in Shopian. The other militant is said to be a non-local.
