Mayor should be good steward- Jyoti

Calgary(ATB): “Mayor should be good steward “expressed Her Worship Mayor of
Calgary, Ms. Jyoti Gondek while being interviewed by our correspondent, Amrit
Brar last week.
Asian Tribune & Amrit Sagar Times have collaborated to produce “Politics
Everywhere & Anywhere” and is maiden episode.
On Housing for Homeless, Mental Health and addiction, Jyoti confirmed that their
Council is very compassionate and is in the process of finalisation of plans to
address these issues in a most befitting way.
“We are also concerned that small business should thrive. However, whatever
Provincial mandatory guidelines are in place, should be adhered to. Whenever
indoors, must wear mask and practise social distancing” stated Jyoti.
On immigrants’ contributions, Jyoti stated that the immigrants play the very
pivotal role in the growth of City as well as country. I remember the great
contributions of (Late) Manmeet Bhullar and the park in his memory will go a long
way to guide our folks and persuade to give back to society.
On the concerns about park security, she said my fellow Councillor went extra
mile to suggest that public safety for those who visit park and reside being
homeless is of paramount concern and should be addressed adequately.
On taxes, Jyoti showed her genuine concern. She stated that Federal and
Provincial taxes are levied on income whereas property taxes are assessed on the
market value. With the passage of time, properties have appreciated manifold
whereas income of residents including Seniors are either lost, reduced or fixed.
Council will be due diligent to consider what kind of services are essential and
based on that tax increase will be worked out minutely.
Born in London, England, Jyoti is the daughter of Punjabi Indian parents Jasdev
Singh Grewal, a lawyer, and Surjit Kaur Grewal. She immigrated to Canada with
her parents in the early 1970s, initially settling in Manitoba.
She was awarded a Ph.D. in Urban Sociology from the University of Calgary. Jyoti
also holds a Bachelor’s degree in criminology/sociology from the University of
British Columbia, and a Master’s degree in organizational sociology from the
University of Manitoba.

On October 18, 2021, Jyoti was elected the 37th Mayor of Calgary. Jyoti was
sworn in along with the incoming City Council on October 25, 2021 becoming the
first female Mayor in the city’s history.
