Driver Examiners Role under Review

Edmonton (ATB): Safety on Alberta roads is a top priority, and better-trained drivers keep roads safe. That’s Provincial Government is exploring initiatives to strengthen the training, testing and oversight of drivers- and asking for your feedback.
Govt is launching a consultation with Albertans and key stakeholder groups on 3 proposed initiatives to improve training and oversight of the commercial truck and bus industry and driver road test services. These include: Mandatory entry level training for commercial drivers.
Alberta is considering introducing a mandatory entry level training (MELT) program for drivers seeking to obtain a Class 1 (tractor-trailer), Class 2 (bus) professional licence, or “S” endorsement (school bus).
Pre-entry requirements for new commercial carriers:
Exploring options to require new commercial carriers to prove their compliance with national standards before receiving safety certification. Right now, the province gives new companies a 60-day period to prove their compliance with federal transportation safety regulations. The province intends to eliminate the 60-day period.
Looking at ways to improve the road test model for all classes of drivers, including the possibility of restoring driver examiners as government employees.
Government will also be seeking feedback on the costs of road test fees.
You can provide your feedback on these options by completing an online survey. Your feedback will be used to inform the development of the new initiatives, which we expect to implement by Jan. 1, 2019.
