Navsari (Near Surat), District Navsari, Gujarat. My father was a foreman in Tata Steel at Jamshedpur/Tata Nagar. I lost mother when I was 6 days old. My Grandma and Aunt raised me.
Your early education
I completed first year of Bachelors of Arts from Gujarat.
When & why you came to Canada?
We were in England and joined my husband in 1980 who he immigrated to Canada.
Your career advancement initiatives and present occupation
While in England, I worked for the Department of Health & Security as Shorthand Typist. On reaching Edmonton, I was hired by Land Titles Department, Government of Alberta as Title Writer.
Your regret in life
Not really.
Pick any one of your the best achievements
I rose to the level of Supervisor in the same department and I feel that my great esteem need was fulfilled.
Were you ever discriminated?
Never ever. So much so, I had been wearing saree while working in England as well as Canada and never experienced any untoward behaviour.
What you miss in Canada?
My extended family, good weather, delicious food, fresh vegetables and a few great friends back home.
Are you happy in Canada?
Of course, I am.
Why?
Cleanliness, Equal opportunities and high degree of ethics make this country a haven on earth. Great friends from both Western and Eastern communities are boon and contribute to the pleasant life.
Any comments on Canada’s weather
After living in this country close to four decades, I have fine-tuned myself to all the four weathers. Summers are really enjoyable and we both work hard to beautify our kitchen garden and satisfy our fresh vegetables yearn.
Any comments on Canada’s culture
Openness of society provide all kinds of avenues. However, I have confined myself to serve our communities by getting involved into various Associations and my love for music have been a great source of my eternal happiness. Even in UK, I used to host bigwigs of Bollywood Industry and on reaching Canada, I really enjoyed humungous religious and spiritual events while interacting with performers as well as performing myself.
What brought you success in Canada?
Hard work, sincerity to purpose and persons, honesty, zeal and amiability. Above all, the support of my husband, Praful Patel at every step in my life.
Are you willing to help new comers?
Absolutely.
How?
We are old school folks. I still remember those days, when we used to loan our car and keep newcomers at our home for months providing them all the essentials. Our doors are open all the times and we both feel honoured and privileged in serving the needy.
Your message for Canadians of Asian origin
Hatred has no place in this beautiful world and one only lives once. Give back to society whatever way you can and good karma will always prevail. Get involved. Learn the system and ask if you can’t. Love and respect has no substitute. Embrace all overcoming religious and cultural barriers.
