When & Why You came to Canada

I came to Canada over 20 years ago. We both (me and my husband) were in very good Punjab Govt. jobs in Jalandhar Distt, Punjab, India. Our frequent interactions’ with NRIs persuaded us to explore Canada, the land of opportunities.

Your career advancement initiatives, volunteer work and present occupation

I started my career as Punjab Govt. Science teacher and rose to the level of Lecturer before coming to Canada. I have Masters in Zoology, B.Ed., M.Ed. & M. I taught at P.P.S. Nabha for 2 years before joining Punjab Govt. and after seven years’ stint, I moved to Canada. Currently I’m working as a Primary Child Care Development Supervisor in a Community Centre. Also, I’m working as a Marketing Director in World Financial Group. From time to time, I am volunteering as an interpreter, Family Councillor to the newcomers at Calgary. I was an acclaimed participant of Giddha & Music competitions while studying at Punjabi University which I still enjoy and involve community.

Your Regret in Life

I was N.C.C. (C Certificate) “RD” cadet in Republic Parade in New Delhi. I was offered Second Lieutenant rank in Indian Army. However, I did not pursue and regret till date.

All acquaintances’ and friends always claim that they feel a positive vibe when I’m around them, I feel is the best achievement.

Were You Ever Discriminated?

Number of times. However, let bygones be bygones.

Are You Happy in Canada?

Yes, I’m very happy in Canada, the beautiful country, it is a bit expensive but overall is safe and has humongous opportunities.

Any Comments on Canada’s Culture

Canada is a Multicultural, very progressive and diverse Country. Known as ‘the just society’. Yes, Western society offers so many pluses and minuses. We have to be focussed to tread the path of happiness and prosperity.

Any Comments on Canada’s Weather

Winters are very harsh and long but at the same time summers are great. We enjoy all four seasons to the fullest with so many activities around.

What Brought You Success in Canada?

Success is having a great career, wealth, and respect from peers. I staunchly believe that “Be leader or join the leader”. I have my own vision and mission and seek to bring it to life on day to day basis. My significant half, Sudhir Bhanot has been very supportive of my initiatives and enabled me excel in every sphere of life.

Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants and How?

I worked as a volunteer in CCIS for few years when I was residing at Calgary Downtown. From that experience, I learnt a lot and now being an active member of my community FCCA, I help the newcomers adequately. Also, I’m supporting other NGO’s that help the newcomers and needy persons by providing groceries, winter clothing and daily needs.

Your Message for Canadians of Asian Origin.

Canadians of Asian descent have shaped the country in the countless ways, from the Arts, Science, Politics, Technology, Sports, Medicine, and every other aspect of Canadian society. Immigrants from around the Globe have brought a rich Cultural Heritage of many ethnicities, languages, and traditions. I suggest all my fellow Asians to spare some time as volunteers and give back to society. Be inclusive, compassionate and connected.
