A 12-year-old boy is in hospital and the SIU are investigating after he was shot at by police while driving an allegedly stolen vehicle in East York early Monday morning. Police say an officer was seriously injured as the driver attempted to flee.

The boy is facing several charges including theft of a motor vehicle, attempted murder and assaulting an officer.

Officers were responding to a call about a stolen vehicle near Donlands Avenue and O’Connor Drive just after 1 a.m., Toronto police said in a post on social media.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, then fired shots at it, before the driver struck an officer and fled, police said. The officer was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers later located the vehicle and its driver, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Toronto paramedics told CBC News they took one youth to the hospital who was injured by shots fired at the scene as well as one adult man injured in the collision. Police said the officer was released from hospital later Monday morning.

One suspect is still outstanding, police said, but no descriptive details were provided.

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, police said. Ontario’s police watchdog investigates the conduct of officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The TTC is reporting several detours on routes in the area due to police activity Monday morning.
