Sitaram Kesari’s name removed from list of Congress presidents on website, added later

After Rao stepped down as chief of the party in September 1996, Kesari was appointed as the new president.
Hours after the Congress party on Tuesday removed the name of former Congress president late Sitaram Kesari from the list of the party presidents on its website, later it again added Kesari’s name. However, the party again removed the name of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from the list, only to be added again. Currently, it has removed the name of party chief Rahul Gandhi. The party later clarified that the name of Kesari was due to some error.
Kesari had served as the party president from 1996 to 1998 but the website names PV Narasimha Rao and Sonia Gandhi as the party presidents during the period from 1990-2018. After Rao stepped down as chief of the party in September 1996, Kesari was appointed as the new president.
He was elected party president of the Bihar unit in 1973 and was elected to Lok Sabha from the Katihar constituency in 1967. Kesari represented Bihar in the Rajya Sabha for five terms between July 1971 and April 2000. He was the union minister when Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao were the prime ministers.
After he exited from office in March 1998, he was denied party candidature for the Rajya Sabha once his last term ended in April 2000. His lack of popular support among the masses caused damage to the party. Kesari’s most controversial act was the withdrawal of support to HD Deva Gowda’s United Front government, which led to the fall of the government in April 1997 but a compromise was reached and the United Front elected IK Gujral as the subsequent new leader with continued support from the Congress.
In 1998, Kesari was stripped of his post by the Congress Working Committee and Sonia Gandhi was appointed the president of the Congress party in his place. Kesari’s removal from the Congress Working Committee is considered by some as a betrayal of the party constitution.
