The celebrations began the moment tears ran down Sherab Ronge’s face.
Not the moment the final whistle blew, but the moment Portugal’s Eder scored in overtime, giving his country its first ever European Championship — and first major tournament win.
In the Euro Sports Bar & Café at the corner of College St. and Lansdowne Ave., not even owner Mario Duante gleefully ringing a bell behind the bar could drown out the shouts of “POR-TU-GAL! POR-TU-GAL!”
“It means everything,” Jacob Da Silva said at half-time of a potential Portugal victory — one that has been a long time coming. “I want to be able to call in sick tomorrow.”
After the game ended, he and the rest of the bar spilled out onto the sidewalk to celebrate.
“It’s amazing,” he said, stopping briefly before running back on the street to high-five passengers in passing cars. “It’s amazing. Soccer is our sport.”
Surveying the revelry, Nelson Raymond said: “It can’t feel better than this.”
Along Dundas St. W. in Little Portugal, crowds filled the streets, dancing with flags streaming over heads and out of car sunroofs amid a cacophony of honking and cheering.
A Germany fan walked by and paused to bow before a group of Portugal fans.
“You finally won,” she said. “Finally.”
