Asian Star-Urooj Riaz

Native Village/Country parent’s background

I was born and grown up in Jaranwala, Punjab, Pakistan. My mother is a housewife, and my father was owing a Utensils shop. He has also served the community as social worker for more than 30 years in Pakistan.

Your Early Education

I completed my early education in Pakistan and did my Master’s in Commerce from a well-known University of Central Punjab, Lahore.

When & Why You came to Canada

I moved to Canada in 2024 in search of better opportunities, both personally and professionally. I was also looking for a peaceful, inclusive society where I can grow without any limitations following my Cultural Values and Traditions in a better way.

Your career advancement initiatives, volunteer work and present occupation

After arriving in Canada, I took bridging course from TIES and attended few networking events to understand the Canadian job market. I volunteered at local Sikh community as Emcee at their community appreciation award ceremony.

Your Regret in Life

I have no regrets in my life as I have learnt from my mistakes, and I always try to find out solutions rather than sitting and wasting time to blame my self and other on little things. I believe “everything happens, happens for a reason.”

Pick Any One of Your Best Achievements

My biggest achievement is to get PR of Canada as coming from the background where you can not even pursue your education and professional life and fulfil your dreams. I feel blessed to have such a cooperative parent who always encourage daughters to grow personally and professionally.

Did you face discrimination?

Yes, at times I did face subtle discrimination, especially in the Job Market of Canada. But I am still learning and taking it as motivation to prove my skills and build stronger connections.

Are You Happy in Canada?

Yes, I am happy to be here with my family as I feel safe, protected and respected among people from different ethnicity culture and religion.

Your take on Canada’s Culture

Canada’s culture is diverse and welcoming. The best thing about Canada is equality and fairness. People are polite and helpful to each other. You can learn so many things that you might have never imagined or listened before, whether it’s food, festivals, cultural events or communicating with people from different backgrounds. It is never too difficult to build connects in Canada.

What about Canada’s Weather

Ah! Its is very challenging specially when you are coming from +50 *C temperature. But the good part about Canada is that you can still enjoy indoor activities gatherings and fun in extreme winter conditions.

What Brought You Success in Canada?

As I have mentioned that I am new immigrant in Canada I haven’t succeeded yet. My journey has just started but to be successful in this competitive world I have to be persistent in achieving my goals and step out from my comfort zone. I must make connections and build a strong network to be a part of this community.

Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants and How?

Yes, I want to serve new immigrants and help them through their struggles that I have faced till now. I can help them to understand Canadian Culture, Job Market, resume making and so on.

Your Message for Canadians of Asian Origin

I would just say that we are humans first. Religion, Culture, Politics and Beliefs comes after. Be proud of your roots as we can never leave them behind but stay kind, stay humble and support each other in whatever way we can. We can make a better community together.
