25 innovation hubs churn out technologies that aid Covid treatment, vaccine transportationNEW DELHI: New and emerging technologies are being developed at 25 innovation hubs, which have been set up across the country under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), to provide solutions to people-centric problems. Several such technologies and technology platforms have turned fruitful in several sectors, including the crucial health sector that attracted special attention during the Covid pandemic.

ARTPARK at IISc-Bangalore developed an AI-driven platform that helped chest X-ray interpretation of images sent over WhatsApp, and, therefore, brought early intervention through rapid screening for Covid-19 infection, aiding doctors who have no access to X-ray machines. The solution called XraySetu is quick and easy to use, and can work with low-resolution images sent via mobiles, providing such a facility to rural areas, a statement from the science & technology ministry said.

In another technological development, a team of scientists from IIT Bombay has developed a tapestry method for screening Covid-19 under Remedial Action, Knowledge Skimming, and Holistic Analysis of Covid (RAKSHAK), an effort supported by IIT Jodhpur’s innovation hub. RAKSHAK has led to the development of a new chest X-ray-based Covid diagnosis system (in the ICMR validation process now), Open Data for Indian and International Covid Cases — COVBASE.

AmbiTag, a first-of-its-kind Internet of Things (IoT) device that monitors ambient temperature during the transportation of vaccines, including Covid-19 shots, medicines, blood samples, food and dairy products, has been developed by researchers at the technology innovation hub of IIT Ropar. So far, such devices were being imported by India. The institute is gearing for mass production of the device, which will be made available to all companies involved in the transportation of Covid vaccines at the production cost of Rs 400.

A consortium launched by IIT-M Pravartak Technologies Foundation and five other entrepreneurial startups in deep tech and engineering domain has been established under the mission Indian space technologies and applications consortium design bureau. It will focus on building an end-to-end Atmanirbhar ecosystem for space technologies from on-demand access to space, including rapid launch capability, satellites, sensors, future generation communication such as 6G and sat data.

The national mission, NM-ICPS, was approved by the Union Cabinet in December 2018 at a cost of Rs 3,660 crore to foster technological solutions in health, education, energy, environment, agriculture, strategic and security areas.
