Recognizing volunteers for service to seniors

Nominees for the 2018 Minister’s Seniors Service Awards acknowledged at three community celebrations across the province.
The Minister’s Seniors Service Awards honour Albertans who improve the lives of seniors through their volunteer service. This year, 29 individuals and 10 organizations are nominated from communities throughout Alberta.The nominees from Edmonton include Sardara Singh Dhillonand Kanwarjit Singh Grewal, and from Calgary Mohan Singh Sidhuand Kulbir Singh Kalkat.

The nominees for the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards were honoured Aug, 8, 9 and 10 in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary, respectively.

Nominee Summaries:

Sardara Singh Dhillon – Edmonton
Sardara Singh Dhillon takes care of many of the day-to-day operations of the North Edmonton Senior Citizens’ Recreation Society that contribute to the overall maintenance of the centre. These include locking and unlocking the facility, maintaining overall cleanliness of the facility, preparing tea and snacks for members and guests, and washing dishes and removing garbage from the facility. His volunteer efforts are instrumental in ensuring the society is able to actively engage with seniors and provide essential
services.

Kanwarjit Singh Grewal – Edmonton
Kanwarjit Singh Grewal has actively served the North Edmonton Senior Citizens’ Recreation Society for over nine years by carrying out many important services that are necessary for the day to day operations of the Centre. Kanwarjit has been instrumental in keeping the society actively engaged by planning and organizing events, and performing bookkeeping and accounting, and day-to-day operations.

Kulbir Singh Kalkat – Calgary
Kulbir Singh Kalkat has been a long-standing member of INCA Senior Citizens’ Society. Kulbir has come to be recognized as a person who not only engages in a variety of volunteer programs, but also sets an example to motivate others to devote their time, energy and efforts in voluntary activities. He is well known in the community as a compassionate person who has a passion for serving others. Kulbir has a natural inclination to serve others and through his volunteerism has helped INCA in conducting various health-related seminars and field tours.

Mohan Singh Sidhu – Calgary
Mohan Singh Sidhu has volunteered for over 20 years to enhance the lives of seniors and community members across Calgary. Mohan helps seniors navigate and access services offered by various levels of government by providing assistance and information services to seniors that experience difficulty due to a language barrier. Mohan has been instrumental in raising awareness of issues related to elder abuse, and has provided support to seniors that have experienced abuse in the past.
