Boy dies after being attacked by 3 dogs in Nova Scotia

Police said that three “large-breed” dogs attacked a 13-year-old boy in Welshtown, N.S., as he was riding past on his bicycle. The boy has since died.

A Nova Scotia community is mourning a 13-year-old boy who died following an attack by three dogs.

Drew Nickerson is remembered as a friend to many who loved the outdoors in a tribute written by a family member that is part of an online fundraiser to support the boy’s mother.

The boy was a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School. The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education said in a statement that his loss will be felt widely and that supports are in place at the school for other students.

Police said on Monday that three “large-breed” dogs attacked the boy just after 5 p.m. on Saturday as he was riding on his bicycle.

The attack was reported on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, N.S., about 12 kilometres north of the town of Shelburne. The boy was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to hospital in Halifax where he later died.

Police said the dogs were euthanized by a veterinarian. The RCMP said Tuesday that their investigation is ongoing.

“At this time, no charges have been laid,” the RCMP said in an email to CBC News.
