Homage- Dr Uday Mohan

Dr Uday Mohan (Elder brother of Vinay Mohan of Edmonton) was a staunch
gentleman, renowned Public Health Expert, responsible son, loving husband,
and a caring father, passed away on 17th May 2021 with the title of Professor
and Head, Era’s Lucknow Medical College and Hospital (ELMC&H) after serving
for more than 45 years at King George’s Medical University(KGMU), Lucknow,
from where he had retired with the same title.
He started off from a very humble family background from the town of Bareilly,
UP, India where most of his childhood was spent. Son to an Engineer in the
Indian Railways and a homemaker, brother to five siblings, what made him stand
apart was his closeness to his grandmother. He always had an instinct of helping
others out and which is why after he got his Bachelor’s in Science his hard work
got him into MBBS in the Batch of 1974 at one of the best colleges in the country:
King George’s Medical University, Lucknow.
He then went on to get his MD in Social and Preventive Medicine (Community
Medicine) from the same College, after which he planned on settling down. Little
did anyone know that the next chapter of his life was about to unravel moments
of extreme joy, success, and pride. He got married to Mrs. Anita Mohan and was
blessed with a girl and boy in the family. The happiness did not stop there. He
was soon awarded a WHO fellowship to visit USA to receive a Certificate in

Management Methods for International Health where he was recognised as the
most meritorious student.
He worked hard to climb the ladders of success and starting off as Assistant
Research Officer in the Department of Community Medicine, KGMU, Lucknow.
He eventually retired as the Head of the same department at the same college.
This write up would fall short or become too lengthy if all his accolades were
mentioned. However, to highlight a few: he was faculty in charge, legal cell,
KGMU, Lucknow for almost 9 years; was president of the Social Outreach
Program, KGMU, Lucknow as well as Academic Counsellor of Indira Gandhi
National Open University (IGNOU) for PGDMCH, PGDMD, DAFE and CAFÉ
courses. He organised many National Conferences and had more than 40
publications under his name in various National and International journals even
though he always tried to make his students the first author. He was advisor on
various Public Service Commissions of different States in India, including UPSC
and was a frequent examiner of Community Medicine in many colleges of India
and Nepal. He was also an honorary member of many key public health
foundations in India and was also awarded the Prof. BG Prasad Oration Award
in 2019 by the Indian Public Health Association.
He was an extremely down to earth man who lived with principles, honour,
dignity, and self-respect throughout his life. He always maintained a perfect
balance between his professional and family life. In precise words he was a
Legend in the field of Public Health and a gem of a Human Being. Only the people
associated with him would clearly know about his philanthropic activities as
these were never institutional but were purely on personal basis.
“Asian Tribune” pay heartfelt homage and pray to almighty to grant peace to
the departed soul who cared for all during his illustrious life.
