Election Commission: Now, Punjab voters can verify their vote

6In a first, voters in Punjab will have the facility to verify that their vote has been gone in favour of the candidate of their choice.
With assembly elections round the corner, the election commission will use voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines in 2,112 polling booth sin the state. The system will enable the voter to ensure that he/she has cast vote for the candidate whom he/she intended to and will also ensure that the authorities will have proof of the votes bagged by each candidate in case political parties raise any objection regarding the EVMs and demand re-poll. The machines have arrived in the state and are undergoing tests. Additional chief electoral officer (CEO), Punjab, Manjit Singh Narang said the machines would be used in selected polling booths during assembly elections, but in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all 22,600 polling stations would have this facility.
The machine would end the scope of a voter challenging the genuineness of an EVM or complaining that his vote has not gone in favour the candidate for whom the EVM button was pressed as the display on the screen would clear the doubt. If a candidate has a doubt, paper receipts in the VVPAT machines could be accessed for recounting. The receipts are evidence in case a candidate moves a court, said Narang. Speaking on the choice of polling station where the VVPAT system would be installed, Narang said one constituency in each district would get these machines. “We are getting vulnerability surveys done and will decide depending on the need,” he said
