Conservative PAC Deregistered

Edmonton (ATB):The chief electoral officer took the action in May because the organization had not filed its 2017 annual report.
But Prem Singh, the primary contact for Alberta Can’t Wait, said the group voluntarily accepted deregistration because it wasn’t conducting activities covered by provincial law.
Under provincial legislation, a third-party organization is required to register with Elections Alberta and file disclosure forms if it is raising and spending money on political advertising.
“We’re not spending any money like that,” Singh said.
“Maybe come election time we’ll apply to be registered again.”
“I was talking to (Elections Alberta) and they said, ‘there’s no point in you guys being registered as a PAC if you’re not spending money.’”
Alberta Can’t Wait was originally founded as an organization dedicated to uniting provincial conservatives. Singh said the group’s primary activity is now commentary on political issues within the province.
The organization was fined $500 for not filing its 2017 annual report.
Alberta Can’t Wait raised $15,000 from a single donation in the first quarter of 2018 according to documents filed with Elections Alberta.
Drew Westwater, spokesman for Elections Alberta, said Alberta Can’t Wait cannot engage in political advertising unless it has registered.
There are currently 17 organizations registered as third-party advertisers with Elections Alberta.
