Chandigarh stalking: No need for Barala to resign for case against son, says Punjab CM Amarinder

6Earlier, the Congress asserted that all the investigation agencies are under the saffron party’s thumb.
Chandigarh : Going against the Congress’ stand, Punjab chief minister and party stalwart Capt Amarinder Singh said on Tuesday said that Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala need not resign over his son Vikas Barala’s alleged involvement in a stalking case in Chandigarh.
Replying to a reporter’s specific question outside Parliament in Delhi, he said, “There no need of any resignation. We want police to do duty.”
To another question, he also dismissed the demand for resignation of Union home minister Rajnath Singh as absurd. “How can Rajnath be held responsible for the incident, or for that matter for any such irresponsible behaviour involving individuals or party leaders or their kin in any part of the country, be it even Punjab?” he asked.
However, he added, action needs to be taken against the accused to ensure justice to the woman and also to send out a strong signal that misuse of political power to undermine any institution, including the police, was not acceptable.
He also urged Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, whom he met briefly outside Parliament, that the culprits in the case should be dealt with strictly.
In a statement released in Chandigarh, he demanded that the UT police be given a free hand to probe the Varnika Kundu stalking case, with no political pressure on them in any way.
