Canadian delegation, including MPs, denied entry into West Bank

MPs previously raised concern about settler violence

Since Netanyahu returned to power in 2022, the pace of both new Israeli settlement-building and forced removals of Palestinians in the West Bank has accelerated.

Canada, along with much of the international community, sees Israeli settlements in the West Bank, built on land captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, as illegal.

After touring the region in January 2024, the MPs on that trip raised concerns about Israeli settler violence in the region.

“These events are happening and I hear this on the ground from many people,” Liberal MP Shafqat Ali told CBC News last year. “I think that needs to be looked at by [the] Israeli government so the violence would not escalate further.”

When asked for reaction to the concerns raised about violence in the West Bank at the time of the 2024 trip, a spokesperson for Israel’s embassy in Ottawa said law enforcement agencies work “to prevent and prosecute any criminal activity in accordance with Israeli law.”
