Provincial police confirmed a second death Sunday after three people were hit by a REM train on Montreal’s South Shore in the early hours of Saturday.
Longueuil police said they received a call around 3:10 a.m. Saturday, at a time when no public transit service is offered. Three young men were struck near Du Quartier station.
On Saturday, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) confirmed the death of a 19-year-old at the scene.
And on Sunday, they told CBC that a 22-year-old, who was being treated for life-threatening injuries, died in hospital.
The third man who is also 19 is out of danger.
The REM communications department told Radio-Canada the incident occurred after “an intrusion onto the tracks.”
The Sûreté du Québec is investigating a fatal collision on the South Shore Brossard line of the REM. Three young men, two of whom died, were struck near Du Quartier station.
On Saturday morning, an emergency response led to the suspension of service between Brossard and Panama stations in both directions, according to the REM. A shuttle service was put in place.
By 3 p.m, the new REM operator, Pulsar, said service on the line had been restored.
“A group of people walking attempted to cross Highway 10 and the REM tracks to reach the other side. Despite the arrival of a train, they continued walking,” SQ spokesperson Sgt. Ève Brochu-Joubert told CBC.
While the REM does not carry passengers at night, trains run on the tracks for technical or transit testing purposes.
SQ investigators were on site Saturday to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident.
Three men attempting to cross the tracks at the Du Quartier station early this morning were struck by an unmanned REM train.
