Speak up, Speak out- CIWA initiative

Calgary(ATB)” CIWA (Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association) has formulated Speak up, Speak Out program to address mental illness issues in our communities” expressed Raksh Joshi, President of Hindu Society of Calgary and Project leader while addressing folks along with Vandana Sharma, Addictions & mental Health Counsellor, CIWA.

The leading cause of disability in Canada is mental illness, affecting 1 in 5 Canadians.

People with a mental illness are twice as likely to have a substance use problem compared to the general population. At least 20% of people with a mental illness have a co-occurring substance use problem. For people with schizophrenia, the number may be as high as 50%.

Many people do not express their mental illness because of the fact that they may get stigmatic.

“We will confirm 100% confidentiality’ affirmed Vanada.

“I appeal to our folks to come forward and speak up, speak out to enable CIWA to address your concern most effectively and provide tailor made solution” requested Raksh.

Vandana Sharma can be reached at 403.561.8073 and Raksh Joshi can be contacted at 403.608.1999
