Freezing rain in forecast for southern Ontario on Friday

A special weather statement has been issued for most of southern Ontario on Friday, with freezing rain possible throughout the morning.

Environment Canada reports precipitation is advancing into southern Ontario on Friday morning.

The weather system reaches as far south as Burlington and all the way up to Midland, with communities from Port Elgin to Peterborough also being impacted, the Environment Canada weather alert map shows.

“What we’re seeing is a warm front associated with a low-pressure system that’s going to be making its way across the province, affecting southern Ontario through today and into tomorrow as well,” said Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Steven Flisfeder.

“With that warm front, we’re seeing some areas that will experience brief periods of freezing rain. With the rising temperatures as that warm front makes its way further northeast, we don’t expect it to have too much of an impact, but there is still that risk.”

He said the system is currently moving northeast across the province.

Brief periods of freezing rain are possible in some areas of southern Ontario as temperatures are near or just below the freezing mark.

The threat of freezing rain should end by the afternoon as temperatures rise above the freezing mark, the national weather agency said.

People should be careful as some surfaces, like roads and sidewalks, may become slippery, Environment Canada said.

Flisfeder says has most areas will see between 10 to 20 millimetres of rainfall.

Environment Canada has also updated some regions north of Midland to a rainfall warning, with between 20 to 40 millilitres expected to fall Friday night and into Saturday.

The rainfall warning is in effect for areas north of Midland, including Algonquin, North Bay, Parry Sound, Muskoka and Grey Bruce.
