Jan. 8, 2016: Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of Sinaloa cartel, caught by Mexican marines in Los Mochis, a seaside city in Sinaloa state. It is third time he is captured.
Feb. 27, 2015: Servando “La Tuta” Gomez, one of world’s most-wanted drug bosses who had terrorized Michoacan state, is announced captured by federal police.
Feb. 22, 2014: Guzman captured, his second arrest, by Mexican and U.S. officials in beach resort of Mazatlan.
July 15, 2013: Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, alias “Z-40,” leader of the brutal Zetas cartel, detained in northern Mexico.
Oct. 7, 2012: Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, alias “El Lazca,” a founder and top leader of the Zetas, killed by Mexican marines. His body is later stolen from funeral home. Trevino Morales takes over Zetas.
Oct. 6, 2012: Alleged Zetas regional leader Salvador Alfonso Martinez Escobedo arrested by Mexican marines. He is suspect in massacres and the killing of U.S. citizen David Hartley in 2010 on Falcon Lake, which straddles U.S.-Mexico border.
Sept. 12, 2012: Purported top Gulf Cartel leader Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez, alias “El Coss,” captured by Mexican marines. U.S. authorities had offered a $5 million reward for his arrest.
Dec. 9, 2010: Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, leader of La Familia Michoacana cartel, killed by federal police during gunfight in village of El Alcalde. His body never recovered, and rumors have persisted that Moreno, known as “the Craziest One,” is still alive.
July 29, 2010: Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel, one of the top leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, killed during raid by Mexican soldiers on house in town of Zapopan.
Dec. 16, 2009: Arturo Beltran Leyva, leader of the Beltran Leyva cartel, killed by Mexican marines during firefight in Cuernavaca.
