India on Sunday became the third nation after the U.S. and Brazil to cross as many as three lakh deaths due to COVID-19. Worst-affected U.S. has reported about 589,703 deaths from 33,105,188 cases. Brazil followed with 448,208 deaths from 16,047,439 cases of the virus.
The country on Sunday recorded 2.4 lakh new cases recorded in a single day. With the fresh cases, India’s tally of COVID-19 cases climbed to 2,65,30,132. The death toll due to the disease rose to 2,99,266 with 3,741 fresh fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am on Sunday showed.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20 lakh-mark on August 7 last, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19 last year.
The country crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4 this year.
According to data available Sunday morning, a total of 2,99,266 deaths were recorded till then, however, the toll has now risen. These deaths included 87,300 from Maharashtra, 24,658 from Karnataka, 23,013 from Delhi, 20,046 from Tamil Nadu, 18,978 from Uttar Pradesh, 14,208 from West Bengal13,089 from Punjab and 12,494 from Chhattisgarh.
The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

According to the Health Ministry, more than 21.80 crore vaccine doses against COVID-19 have been provided to states and Union Territories so far and over 1.
90 crore jabs are still available with them.
In a statement, the ministry said 40,650 COVID-19 vaccine doses are in the pipeline and will be received by the states/UTs within the next three days. Of this, the total consumption, calculated based on average up to May 22, 2021, including wastages is 19,90,31,577 doses (according to data available at 8 am on Sunday).
More than 1.90 crore Covid vaccine doses (1,90,20,313) are still available with the states/UTs to be administered.
Meanwhile, the country has set a record of conducting the highest COVID-19 testing in a single day with more than 21.23 lakh fresh tests. This is also the fifth successive day that more than 20 lakh tests have been conducted in India. Cumulatively, 21,23,782 tests conducted have been conducted in the last 24 hours in the country.
